The sailors were greeted by several pods of dolphins throughout the second day of racing for the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Queensland Youth Week. The picture perfect conditions were ideal for the dolphins but made setting courses on Waterloo Bay a challenge for the Race Officers.
The inconsistent oscillating breeze forced several course changes across all fleets with the Laser 4.7 and Radials having to finish the day with only two completed races out of three.
Melissa Hitchen-Haw from Victoria received the two bullets of the day in the Laser 4.7 fleet and now sits in third behind Milly Bennett (NSW) and Thomas Vincent (VIC) who are equal on 16 points with Vincent ahead on a tie break.
Luke Elliott (WA) still leads the Laser Radial fleet ahead of local Mitchell Kennedy (QLD). Two points separates these competitive sailors with Jeremy O’Connell (VIC) in third a further two points behind Kennedy.
Consistency is paying off for Sabot sailor Trevor Koreman (QLD) who has an eight point lead without having won a race.
Reece Baillie (QLD) is dominating in the Bic Techno fleet having won all races conducted so far. Baillie’s training ground is Waterloo Bay where the racing is being conducted and clearly local knowledge is paying off for the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron sailor.
Victorian sailors James Sly and Tom Dwyer are holding their lead in the 29er class and sit two points clear of George Davies and Jack Lloyd (VIC).
The forecast for day three looks promising however officials are speculating if the conditions will mimic the prediction.
International Race Officer Denis Thompson said the conditions yesterday in no way represented the forecast.
“We were meant to get a 20 knot southerly however ended up with a 6 knot south-wester,” said Thompson. “It was a long day for the Sabot and Optimists sailors!”

The rain cleared and the breeze set in for the first day of the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Queensland Youth Week incorporating the Australian Midwinter Youth Championship.
The competitors were keen to hit the water and there were a few nerves when the 25 knot nor’wester kicked in 45 minutes prior to the first warning signal of the day.
The conditions cleaned out the fleet with many heading back to shore a bit broken and battered, but those who managed to work through the pressure had some fantastic racing on Waterloo Bay east of Brisbane city.
Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is the host of the regatta which is held annually in the June/July school holidays.
James Sly and Tom Dwyer from Victoria are currently leading the 29er fleet after two races.
“The breeze was awesome today we loved it,” said Sly.
“The sharp chop is a little intense but we’ve set the boat up to handle the conditions,”
“We love it up here, this is a great regatta and one of my favourites,” continued Sly.
Local sailors and sisters Sasha and Jaime Ryan lead the 420 fleet.
“It’s a small 420 fleet but the competition is still tough. James (Brewer) is really good starter because of his years in Optimists,” said (Sasha) Ryan.
All fleets managed to get in both races that were scheduled for today. Day two will see the competitors tackle three races.

Yachting Australia and the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron have announced date changes for two key youth regattas to be held in July this year.
To avoid a date clash the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Queensland Youth Week and the Australian Schools Team Racing Championship have been moved to allow competitors to take part in both of these important youth regattas.
The OAMPS Insurance Brokers Queensland Youth Week will now be held from July 3-6 at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron with the Australian Schools Team Racing Championship taking place at Port River Sailing Club in South Australia from July 8-11.
Yachting Australia is grateful for the efforts of Suellen Hurling from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and Wayne Thompson from Yachting South Australia in making these changes.
